Healthy Habits for New Parents: Caring for Yourself While Caring for Baby

Welcoming a new baby is one of life's most joyful experiences, but it also brings broken sleep, new routines and plenty of emotions. Amid feeds, nappies and cuddles, many new parents forget to look after themselves. Yet caring for your own health is one of the best things you can do for your baby.

Here are simple habits that help new parents stay well.

Rest whenever you can

Sleep will be interrupted for a while, so take rest where you can find it. Napping when your baby naps, sharing night feeds where possible and accepting help from family and friends all make a difference.

Eat simple, nourishing food

Busy days make it tempting to skip meals. Keep easy, healthy snacks within reach, such as fruit, yoghurt, nuts and wholegrain crackers, and drink plenty of water, especially if you are breastfeeding.

Looking after yourself is not selfish. It is part of looking after your baby.

Move gently

Short walks with the pram, gentle stretching and fresh air can lift your mood and energy. Check with your doctor before returning to more vigorous exercise after giving birth.

Look after your emotional health

Feeling tearful or overwhelmed in the early days is common. However, if low mood, anxiety or a sense of not coping lasts more than a couple of weeks, speak to a health professional. Support is available, and asking for help is a sign of strength.

Helpful tip: Make a short list of practical tasks friends can help with, such as cooking a meal or doing a supermarket run, so you are ready when they offer.

Stay connected

Talking with your partner, friends or other new parents helps you feel less alone. Sharing experiences and tips can be both reassuring and fun.

Keep up with check-ups

Postnatal check-ups for parents and regular baby check-ups are important. They are a good chance to ask questions and raise any concerns.

Be kind to yourself. There is no such thing as a perfect parent, only a loving one doing their best.
